    SKATERS EXCEL IN BRACKNELL COMPETITION

Island skaters were celebrating again after success at the annual Bracknell open competition. Carol and Steve Taverner represented the Island in the adult section on the Monday gaining first place with their pair’s routine to the Glen Miller Band. Carol then went on to gain second place for her solo performance in the silver ladies level.

On the Thursday and Friday, six young Island skaters – some of them competing in their first mainland competition – achieved outstanding results.

Toni Delap, aged 9, started the day off brilliantly skating to Anastasia, achieving first place in the beginner girls aged 8 and 9 category, beating off competition from 9 other skaters. Olivia Lacey, aged 10, then took 3rd place performing to The Goonies, in the beginner ladies aged 10 and 11, competing against 11 other girls.

For the boys Miles Grist, aged 11, achieved first place in the men’s level two section skating to “Feeling Good” by Muse. His first outing at this level, up against 4 other boys.

Also representing the Island were Lauren Wood aged 9 in her debut for the beginner girls aged 8 and 9, Hannah Barfoot, aged 16, Ladies level 1 aged 12 and over and Keelin Scholes, aged 16, ladies level 3 aged 13 and over. All three skated brilliantly and earned valuable experience at the event.

The Isle of Wight Ice Dance and Figure Skating Club are now looking forward to the Basingstoke annual open competition in June.

We have received an email today, to say that at a recent meeting, several Clubs had asked Maureen Kershaw to pass onto us all what a lovely Club the Isle of Wight is. The IOW Team at the NTC were cheering on ALL the Clubs and not just our own.
This is the real spirit of the NTC, congratulations.

The Isle of Wight Ice Dance and Figure Skating Club headed to Lee Valley on Sunday 4th July for the National Team Challenge 2011 skating event.  Competing against 7 other clubs across the country the Island achieved their best ever performance by scoring 60 points and gaining 2nd place.

The challenge is to enter 8 classes out of 14 across the different levels and categories and then entering a  team into a `Show Number’.  With the talent at the club it was a tough decision for the coaches to choose who should enter and represent the club.  Keelin Scholes was first to skate in the first category setting a very high standard as she skated to Robin Hood in the Female/Male beginners class coming 1st in the class.  Mile Grist skated first in his category of Male Level 3 and Under and although skating at beginner level, his performance to Michael Jackson earned him a well deserved 3rd place. Next was Nikita Heathfield skating in the Level 8 and Under Female class with the tension building and the team cheering Nikita on, her performance was outstanding taking her into 1st place.  Our beginner couple Olivia Lacey and Mitchell Brown were the only couple to skate in their class but to score a 1st they need to skate their best and that they did, watch out Torvil and Dean.  Carol and Steve Taverner were entered into the Veteran Couples skating a Waltz and a Tango and after both performances came 4th.  The Wight Jewels then skated against the Basingstoke team to their Michael Jackson medley and gave the winning performance.  With so many top scores the pressure was on for Archie Bicknell when he performed his `Queen’ medley but was just beaten into 2nd  place by a strong performance from a skater from Alexander Palace.  With a quick change Archie then performed `I can do anything’ with Maggie Read, again with very strong competition the double trouble pair came 4th.

As a resurface of the ice took place and the 1st and 2nd places very close, the team got ready for their last performance on the day.  As the team got ready on the ice and the music started to the Addams Family then intoThriller, the skaters performed their very best performance earning them 4th place in the class.

All teams were asked onto the ice and medals were given out to the winners of each class the tension heighten as they announced the final places of each competing team;  8th place was Romford, 7th Chelmsford, 6th Lee Valley, joint 4th Basingstoke and Guildford, 3rd place went to Bracknell and IOW  just got beaten to the post by 2 points to Alexander Palace.

The whole team were very supportive of the event and clapped and cheered at every performance, although the sound became deafening when their team members competed.  Well done to everyone, we are very proud of you and we are definitely working hard to become 1st next year.  A big thank you goes to Wightlink for sponsoring the team across the water.
